Signs of Feeling Upset

  • Tearfulness or Crying: Tears, sobbing, or crying episodes.
  • Sad Facial Expressions: Downturned mouth, drooping eyes.
  • Quietness or Withdrawal: Becoming silent, avoiding eye contact, or retreating from others.
  • Lack of Engagement: No interest in play or activities they usually enjoy.
  • Physical Clinginess: Wanting to be held or comforted more than usual.
  • Slow Movements: Moving sluggishly or with a lack of energy.

Responding to Your Child Who Feels Upset

1. Offer Calm, Reassuring Presence
  • Sit nearby or hold your child's hand if they want physical comfort.
  • Use a gentle voice and calm tone to reassure them, saying things like, "I'm here with you," or "It's okay to feel sad."
2. Validate Their Feelings
  • Acknowledge their emotions without judgment: "I see you're feeling upset," or "It's okay to cry; you're safe."
  • Avoid dismissing or trying to 'fix' their feelings immediately. Validation helps them feel understood.
3. Provide Comfort and Physical Closeness
  • Offer hugs, cuddle, or hold them if they seek physical comfort.
  • Use a favorite blanket or stuffed toy to provide a sense of security.
4. Create a Quiet, Safe Space
  • Encourage your child to sit in a cozy spot where they can feel safe and relaxed.
  • Sometimes, a quiet corner with calming items (books, soft music, stuffed animals) can help them self-regulate.
5. Use Soothing Techniques
  • Gentle breathing exercises: encourage slow, deep breaths to help regulate emotions.
  • Count to ten together or use a visual breathing buddy (like a stuffed animal on their belly).
6. Engage in Gentle Distraction or Comfort Activities
  • Offer a favorite calming activity, such as drawing, listening to soothing music, or reading a story.
  • Sometimes, engaging in a simple, familiar activity can help shift focus and reduce distress.
7. Respect Their Need for Space
  • If they withdraw or seem overwhelmed, give them permission to take a break and return when ready.
  • Respect their cues—sometimes, children need a moment alone before they can talk or engage again.
8. Maintain Routine and Consistency
  • Keep a predictable routine to provide stability during emotional upset.
  • Consistent routines help children feel safe and secure.
9. Model Calmness and Emotional Regulation
  • Demonstrate healthy ways to cope with emotions yourself.
  • Use your own words and actions to show that feelings are normal and manageable.
10. Seek Additional Support if Needed
  • If your child's distress persists or worsens, consider consulting a pediatrician, counselor, or mental health professional for guidance.

Remember: Every child is unique, and what works for one may not work for another. The key is patience, empathy, and creating a safe space where your child feels supported to express their feelings.

Activity Ideas

1. Deep Breathing with a Visual Aid
  • Use a stuffed animal or a small toy placed on their belly.
  • Encourage your child to breathe slowly and deeply so the toy rises and falls with each breath.
  • Count together: “Inhale slowly for 3 seconds… Exhale for 3 seconds…”
2. Calm-Down Jar (Sensory Bottle)
  • Fill a clear bottle with water, glitter, and a few drops of food coloring.
  • When shaken, the glitter swirls around, creating a calming visual.
  • Encourage your child to hold and watch the glitter settle to help them relax.
3. Feelings Drawing or Coloring
  • Provide paper and crayons or markers.
  • Invite your child to draw how they’re feeling or to color a picture representing their emotions.
  • Discuss the drawing afterward to help them express their feelings.
4. Use a “Calm-Down” Corner
  • Create a cozy space with soft pillows, stuffed animals, or calming objects.
  • Encourage your child to go there when overwhelmed and spend a few minutes relaxing.
5. Gentle Movement or Stretching
  • Lead simple stretching exercises or gentle yoga poses designed for kids (e.g., butterfly stretch, child's pose).
  • Movement can help release tension and regulate emotions.
6. Listening to Soothing Music or Nature Sounds
  • Play calming music or nature sounds to help your child relax.
  • Encourage them to lie down or sit quietly while listening.
7. Sensory Play
  • Offer calming sensory activities like playdough, textured fabrics, or a sensory bin filled with rice or beans.
  • Sensory input can help ground children when they feel overwhelmed.
8. Storytelling or Reading
  • Read stories that focus on feelings and coping strategies.
  • Discuss the characters’ emotions and how they handle difficult situations.
9. Practice “Feelings Check-In” with a Feelings Chart
  • Use a feelings thermometer or chart to help your child identify and verbalize their emotions.
  • Talk about what might help them move toward feeling better.
10. Guided Visualization or Imaginary Escape
  • Lead your child through a simple guided imagery, like imagining a safe, happy place (beach, park, favorite room).
  • Use descriptive language and encourage them to picture themselves there.

Remember: Choose activities based on your child's preferences and current emotional state. Sometimes, just sitting quietly and offering a comforting presence is enough. The goal is to help your child feel safe, understood, and supported.
