Transporting Children with Special Needs
For a newborn or older child who has special health care needs, such as those in a spica hip cast or body cast, recent surgical repair of myelomeningocele, or have had a tracheostomy, decreased muscle tone, behavior problems, Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip (DDH), etc.
For these conditions, there are special needs convertible car seats, car beds, and vests available. Some hospitals have loaner programs so it is best to check with the nursing unit, hospital social worker, or occupational therapist to confirm if a program exists at the hospital. Another option, which can be equally as expensive as purchasing a special needs car seat, is non-emergency medical transport. Practitioners and educators can also consult the American Academy of Pediatrics, "Transporting Children With Special Health Care Needs" for additional information. |
Hospital-based Program and Services: If you are a healthcare practitioner or other staff at a hospital and in the need of a temporary special needs' car seat for a child in a Spica cast, please contact us. We also assist hospitals with planning and developing a Car Seat Loaner Program for Child in Spica Casts.
