For children with special health care needs—such as those in a spica hip cast or body cast, who have recently undergone surgical repair of myelomeningocele, have a tracheostomy, decreased muscle tone, behavioral challenges, Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip (DDH), or other medical conditions—there are specialized transportation options available. These include special needs convertible car seats, car beds, and support vests designed to ensure safety during transportation.
Some hospitals offer loaner programs for such equipment; it is recommended to consult with the hospital’s nursing unit, social worker, or occupational therapist to confirm if such programs are available at your facility. Another transportation option is non-emergency medical transport (NEMT), which can sometimes be as costly as purchasing a specialized car seat.
