Smart Choices: Parenting for Success
As a parent myself, I understand that we all strive to do our best for our children. As a cognitive neuroscientist, our brains are uniquely shaped by our experiences and the environments we have encountered, whether positive or negative (J. DeCarli). This also applies to us as parents. Often, our responses to parenting situations are influenced by our past experiences, inherited behaviors, and the traditions we have grown up with, impacting how we interact with our children. Children learn from our actions, behaviors, and the environments we create for them. As a cognitive neuroscientist, equipping parents with the knowledge of how adult and teen brains develop, along with practical behavioral tools, can significantly enhance parenting practices. By understanding brain development, parents can model positive behaviors and create a nurturing environment, ultimately reducing adolescent risk behaviors and supporting their children's growth. |
