Keep your Pet Safe on July 4th

More pets run away on July 4th than any other day of the year. Loud noises and bright flashes from fireworks scare off mostly dogs and cats. Each year 30% of pets run off into the night, but unfortunately, less than half are found (Pet Amber Alert).

Whether you take your pet with you or if you must leave your pet at home, the following checklists will help keep your pet safer on the 4th.

Taking your pet with you

• ID Collar: Keep an up-to-date ID tag on your pet
• Photo: Take a current photo of your pet just in case
  
• Cooking: Have quests play or keep your pet active to keep away from flames
• Keep-Away: Keep fireworks, charcoal away from curious pets
  
• Exercise: Take your pet for a walk or run to exercise them before fireworks begin
• Food, Water & Treats: Have plenty available
• Keep Your Pet With You: Never leave your pet in a motor vehicle, camper or tied up alone
• During Fireworks: Comfort, play & give pets a treat

Leaving your Pet at Home

Preparation

• Pet Sitter: Find someone to stay with your pet if possible
• Pet Location: Find a safe and quiet room or location for your pet
• Window Covering: Cover windows to help soften flashes and loud sounds
• Valuables: Keep anything you do not want chewed or scratched up in case your pet does gets scared
• Food & Water: Have plenty of fresh food and water
• Toys: Leave their favorite toys to keep them occupied

Before You Leave

• Walk: Take your pet for a walk or run to exercise them
• Sound: Turn television or radio volume on low volume to help drown out any loud sounds from fireworks
