A Story Behind the Guidelines The need for this resource became clear through a real-life experience. I was contacted by a mother, a former home visit client, who was worried about her 4-year-old daughter. She said, “I am worried about my little girl and I’m not sure what to do. She has been rubbing herself quite frequently. The past few months I’ve had her uncle babysit her. I’m worried that maybe she has been abused or something.” After some gentle questioning, it became clear that her concerns about abuse were unfounded. The behaviors she was noticing—self-exploration and touching her genitals—are very common for children her age. We discussed how these behaviors are normal and how to talk to her daughter in a calm, reassuring manner. We provided guidance on explaining that touching oneself is natural but should be done privately, such as in her room or when no one else is around. We also shared information from the AAP and provided additional resources.
