Did you know that 96% of parents feel that their car seat is installed correctly and that their child is buckled properly under California law? Unfortunately, about 75% of children are not riding safely under the law. This means 3 of 4 children are NOT riding safely in motor vehicles. Not riding safely is the number one reason that motor vehicle injuries are the leading cause of death and hospitalization among children.

Why parents make mistakes

Parents want to be safe but even when they try to follow the instructions and recommendations, they often make mistakes. Mistakes are common from:

• Different types of car seats and vehicles, all with different and/or confusing instructions 
• State law requirements
• Recommendations from family, friends and even professionals who are not certified in child passenger safety, all can result in confusion and mistakes. ​
• ​Not having a Certified Child Passenger Safety Technician (CPST) teach how to install, test, and use their car seat properly.
  

When mistakes are made with the type of car seat, installation and when buckling up the child, this can result in severe injury or death during a crash. However, when children use an appropriate type of car seat, with it correctly installed and the child buckled properly, infants are 71% safer, toddlers are 54% safer and children riding in booster seats are 59% safer.
