Home Safety on the HomefrontGet a home safety assessment to prepare your home.
No home is fully childproofed, but having layers of protection can help protect your baby to keep them safe from injury, as a result of a brief lapse in supervision. As a Master Certified Health Education Specialist (MCHES), and an injury epidemiologist, most injuries among children, especially among toddlers, happen in the home. It is recommended to have your home childproofed by the time your baby is 5 to 6 months of age. Pro Consumer Safety provides evidence-based home safety assessments, evaluated by Public Health Behavior Solutions to ensure your home is as safe as possible, with additional research and recommendations by the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission, Safe Kids Worldwide, and the National Safety Council. |
In response to children falling from windows in military housing, more recently, a condition of the Fiscal 2018 National Defense Authorization Act, requires military housing to have windows equipped with fall prevention devices (Jowers, 2022). While this is a positive step towards preventing window-related falls, other risks in the home can also be dangerous to children. Risks can also include falls from balconies and stairs, substandard stair and balcony railings, furniture and flat monitor television pullovers, drownings in pools, Jacuzzi and water bodies in bathrooms, suffocation, strangulation from window pull cords and other hazards, and burns, for example. Whether you live on or off-base military housing call for customized home safety assessment, room-by-room, to make sure your home has all the layers or protection to keep your child as safe as possible
