Christmas Tree Safety

Live Tree Warning! Most Christmas tree fires happen between Christmas Day and New Year. For those who celebrate Christmas or Hanukkah with a tree or bush that is decorated, remember if you have a live tree, it can dry out quickly in a warm home. Three common cause of tree fires are:

1. Tree not watered regularly (check water daily)
2. Tree placed too close to a heat source, such as a fireplace or heater (keep at least 3 feet away)
3. Too many strands of lights being plugged together (not more than 3 strands-follow directions)

Choosing a Tree

• ​Artificial trees: These trees are the safest due to fire risks.  However, labels must read “Fire Resistant”
  
• Live trees: Make sure no needles fall off when you brush your hand against it. If needles fall of it is not fresh and a fire hazard
  
• Keep stand filled with water so tree does not dry out quickly. Check water daily

Setting up the Tree

• ​Place tree away from fireplaces, radiators, and portable heaters
  
• Be sure the tree is mounted on a sturdy base and placed away from walking areas so children cannot pull it over onto themselves

Decorating the Tree

• ​Snow spray: Follow directions to avoid lung irritation
• Use only flame-resistant decorations and ornaments
• Hang small breakable ornaments on upper branches to keep away from children
• Keep any ornaments that are sharp, breakable, look like candy or have small removable parts out of reach of children
• Never use lighted candles on trees
• Choose tinsel or artificial icicles made of non-leaded material. Lead materials are hazardous to children
