Beach Weather Tips
California Summer Beach Weather:
Cold, Foggy, Windy & Sometimes Sunny Throughout most of California from early June through September the beaches are generally cooler and foggy. Many tourists and other visitors are often fooled by movies filmed on southern California beaches because they give the impression of warm water and warm sunny temperatures. However, this is not true and yes the actors in these movies are very "cold" during filming. |
During summer months as inland temperatures increase, the coastal areas become cool and foggy. The fog usually burns off in the late afternoon, followed by cooler onshore winds (coming from the ocean). Cold water, not as cold as in winter, but also cool winds blowing off the ocean is why many locals wear a wetsuit while surfing and wearing warmer clothing walking on the beach or watching a summer sunset. This does vary according to beach location such as in San Diego is warmer in general compared to Los Angeles beaches, and as does going further up the coast, for example. Once September and October arrive conditions change at the beach. There is less fog, more sun at the beach due to change from the summer onshore wind to the autumn offshore breezes (coming from inland) which are warmer and provide better surfing conditions. Although water temperature tends to begin to get colder as well.
