Come padre alle prime armi, è fondamentale assicurarsi che il neonato sia correttamente assicurato in un seggiolino per auto installato correttamente per la prima volta. Tra i bebé che sono deceduti a causa dell'asfissia posizionale (asfissia), il 69% è morto mentre viaggiava in un seggiolino per auto a causa di un'imperfetta sicurezza. L'asfissia posizionale può verificarsi nei neonati e nei bambini se non sono ben assicurati in un seggiolino per auto rivolto all'indietro o se il seggiolino non è installato correttamente. Quando la testa di un bambino si inclina in avanti a causa di una flessione incontrollata del collo, il mento può premere sul torace. Questa posizione può restringere le vie aeree, rendendo difficile la respirazione normale del bambino. La riduzione del flusso d'aria può causare gravi rischi per la salute, come l'asfissia.

In uno studio su 11.779 morti di neonati e bebè legate al sonno, il 69% è avvenuto in seggiolini di sicurezza a causa di asfissia posizionale per un fissaggio e una posizione inadeguati (Liaw et al., 2019). La forza gravitazionale discendente della testa è associata all'uso scorretto del seggiolino di sicurezza, oltre ad altri fattori:​
  • Angolo errato della sedia per auto (non seguire le istruzioni)
  • Uso scorretto dell'inserto per neonati
  • Bambino in una sedia per auto con le cinghie dell'imbracatura allentate o slacciate
  • Uso eccessivo di imbottitura attorno al bambino o sulle cinghie dell'imbracatura
  • Dormire in una sedia per auto, dentro o fuori dal veicolo (automobile, passeggino, ecc.)
  • Mancanza di supervisione costante di un adulto mentre il bambino è nella sedia per auto
  • Volto coperto da un tessuto o un'altra copertura protettiva nella sedia per auto

Quando il seggiolino per auto è installato correttamente e il tuo bambino è ben assicurato, la sua testa rimarrà inclinata all'indietro, mantenendo le vie aeree aperte. Questa posizione consente un normale flusso d'aria e garantisce che il tuo bambino possa respirare comodamente mentre è nel suo seggiolino per auto.

Ulteriori consigli di sicurezza per il seggiolino dell'auto

  • I seggiolini per auto non sono progettati per dormire in modo sicuro né per il tempo di vigilanza senza supervisione. Ricordate SEMPRE di NON lasciare un bambino incustodito in un seggiolino per auto (Devitt, 2012; Come mantenere il vostro bambino al sicuro mentre dorme: Politica dell'AAP spiegata, 2023).
  • I seggiolini auto devono essere utilizzati solo mentre si è in macchina e, quando vengono utilizzati, il bambino deve sempre essere sorvegliato da un adulto responsabile.
  • Se possibile, fate sedere un adulto sul sedile posteriore con il vostro bambino. Questo vi permetterà di monitorare la posizione della testa e del collo del bambino, nonché il suo respiro.
  • Utilizza solo le cinghie dell'imbracatura per posizionare correttamente il bambino. Non aggiungere mai cuscini o coperte, poiché potrebbero compromettere la sicurezza.
  • Assicurarsi sempre che le cinghie siano completamente allacciate. Assicurarsi che le cinghie dell'imbracatura siano ben strette. Per i seggiolini rivolti all'indietro, le cinture superiori delle spalle devono essere posizionate all'altezza delle spalle del bambino o al di sotto di esse, e la clip toracica deve essere all'altezza delle ascelle.
